Intimidation Clothing October Athlete of the Month – Anthony Durnell

It’s not often that fighters in combat sports get to go out on their own terms, as the definition of a warrior includes a competitive fighting spirit. But one such fighter who was able to go out on his own terms was Anthony Durnell, a member of Team Intimidation. He recently announced his retirement from mixed martial arts competition.

Anthony Durnell MMADurnell had a successful 18-fight career, including fights all over the world during his time in the United States Air Force. In 2012, he returned stateside, where he had his first fight at RFO Big Guns 9. He defeated Rustin Jones, and soon thereafter he became an official member of Team Intimidation.

“Intimidation has been absolutely phenomenal from the second [President] Luke [Jernigan] and I met,” Durnell said. “Always extremely professional, and they always went above and beyond. I’m going to continue to wear their gear. Not only because they make sick shirts, but because we need more people like those at that company.”

Durnell was extremely successful as a professional, going 14-4 including winning 5 of his last 6 bouts. He held a perfect 3-0 record for Pittsburgh’s Pinnacle FC, and he was reportedly slated to compete at a Bellator MMA event in November. But with a desire to spend more time with his family and coaching rather than fighting, he decided that now was the time for him to hang it up.

“Retiring from MMA was an extremely difficult and emotional decision,” Durnell said. “I have invested years, and years, into the sport. So much went into becoming a better Martial artist. But it was time for a number of reasons. The last year or so, I have realized that I get more satisfaction seeing my teammates and friends succeed. Guys like [Mark] Cherico, [Justin] Wilcox, [Kyle] Rozewski, [Khama] Worthy, [Cody] Garbrandt and all my Thai students, than I would when I would win my own fight. I’ll still be around the fight game. It will never be too far from my mind. Plus, my wife and I are extremely excited to welcome our third child into our home around March. So who knows we may have another martial artist storming through the Fight Club Pittsburgh cages soon.”

Tony Durnell MMADurnell started his pro career in 2008 with a fight in Germany, and he started his career 8-0. Since returning to the U.S., Durnell lost just one bout, to top featherweight prospect Cody Stevens.

“My career was blessed beyond compare,” Durnell said. “Just to have the opportunities to fight in some of the world’s oldest and most beautiful cities was incredible. Cities like Helsinki, Lucern, and Kaiserslautern, insane! Some of my favorite memories were people who couldn’t speak any English at all trying to tell you how awesome your fight was. Another was beating the eventual BAMMA (Brittish Association of Mixed Martial Arts) Featherweight Champion, Alan Omer, in front of his home crowd. Then to top it off by getting the opportunity to train at Pittsburgh’s premier MMA gym, and end on a three fight win streak was a beautiful ending.”

Durnell has always been known as not only an exciting fighter inside the cage, but also a respectful and honorable man outside it. He will always be a valued member of Team Intimidation.

Check out the video of his final fight below, a victory over Amran Aliyev at Pinnacle FC’s Pittsburgh Challenge Series 4 in August.

Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month – Dustin Parrish

Intimidation Clothing is pleased to announce its September 2013 Athlete of the Month – Dustin Parrish.

Parrish, an amateur fighter from Indiana, boasts an impressive 7-1 record and is one of the fastest-rising stars on the Midwest MMA scene. Now training at American Top Team in Indianapolis, Parrish got his start in MMA after going to a local martial arts school just to take a break from wrestling. Dustin Parrish MMAHe began his amateur MMA career in 2011 at just 18 years old, and he quickly rattled off 7 wins in 7 outings over his first two years as a fighter. All 7 of those wins came via stoppage, with the first 6 coming in the first round.

Now training with Carlos Diaz of American Top Team and Myron Greber of Iron Horse Martial Arts, Parrish still trains with his brother and wrestling coach Ryan Parrish at Contenders Wrestling Academy. His well-rounded training is the key to his success, as he has posted 2 TKO victories to go along with 5 submissions in his 7 wins. Most recently, Parrish dropped his first career bout to Sean Fallon with via a razor thin split decision in a bout that many are calling one of the best of the year. Parrish will look to get back on the winning track when he drops to the 155 pound lightweight division for his next bout at the upcoming Art of War 8 event.

“Selecting an amateur fighter as our Athlete of the Month for September was a tough decision,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “But Dustin Parrish is an example of what a company like ours looks for each day in an athlete sponsorship. dustin-parrish_350His consistent promotion of our brand and loyalty are the reason he was chosen for this honor and honestly, nearly every sponsored athlete in any sport would be wise to watch how Parrish treats his sponsors and take notes.”

Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month – Dan “Dragon” Spohn

August 5, 2013 by
Filed under Athlete of the Month, News, Sponsorships

Life as a fighter is full of highs and lows, and one mixed martial artist who has experienced both in his career is light heavyweight Dan “Dragon” Spohn. A dedicated father and family man, the Columbus native has competed as a martial artist for nearly his entire life; Spohn is a black belt in Kachido Akijitsu and is known for his creative striking style and well-rounded mixed martial arts game. A longtime member of Team Intimidation, Spohn is the Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month for August 2013.

Dan Spohn MMASpohn was on top of the world in September 2011, as he had just earned the second fastest knockout in Bellator history with 9-second KO of Dane Bonnigson in his debut at Bellator 51, moving his record to 6-0. Then the NAAFS champion after a victory over John Hawk earlier in the year, Spohn signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator with the intent to eventually earn a place in one of the organization’s tournaments for a chance to fight his way to #1 contender status.

And that’s when the tough times started. Spohn lost his next bout in Bellator just over a month later, as he fell to Kelvin Tiller via split decision at Bellator 56. Then Spohn got an opportunity to fight for Bellator once again in Ohio, as he welcomed Attila Vegh to the U.S. for the first time. The bout was back-and-forth through three rounds between the two counter punchers, but once again Spohn was on the wrong side of a split decision.

After the loss, Spohn received one more opportunity in Bellator, as he signed on to defend his NAAFS light heavyweight title against Josh Stansbury at Bellator 71 in West Virginia. And for the first time in his career, Spohn was finished as he lost via submission to Stansbury in the very first round. While Spohn was left to ponder his fighting future, Vegh began his run in the Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament at that same event and proceeded to win Bellator’s 205lb belt.

Dan Spohn MMABut despite the three-fight losing streak, Spohn remained upbeat and never got down on himself as a fighter. He made changes in his training and went back to controlling his own fight camps, and earlier this year he made his debut for the Columbus-based UVC organization with a submission victory over Robert Morrow in the main event at UVC 22. Suddenly Spohn was on his way back up the mountain, and his fighting career was given a new light with an organization that was willing to feature him as a main event star.

Spohn returned to the UVC in May, and once again earned a submission victory, this time stopping Aaron Mays with an arm bar in the first round. Now with two straight wins and a 8-3 pro record against some very tough competition, Dan Spohn is now ready for his next big opportunity. With an eye on the August 24th NAAFS Light Heavyweight title fight between John Hawk and Josh Stansbury, and the recent fights from the UVC closer to home, he should have several nice opportunities to extend his winning streak and gain national prominence.

“Dan is truly one of the good guys in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “Few carry themselves with so much class and it is an honor for our brand to work with Dan and his wonderful family. I am truly pleased to have Dan Spohn as our August Athlete of the Month.”

Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month – Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz

Few can compare to Forrest Petz. As a man and as a fighter, Petz (26-10) has proven to be not only a pioneer in the sport but also a class act in and out of the cage. While his time inside the cage came to a close on Saturday, June 1st, 2013 there is no shortage of impact that “The Meat Cleaver” has had on the sport, especially in the booming Northeast Ohio market.

Forrest Petz MMA A veteran of nearly 40 professional fights, Petz, unlike many in the sport, was able to go out on top. After his second stint in the UFC ended in the Fall of 2011, Petz won 5 of 6 fights to close out his career winning at NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats IX last weekend over Bellator signee Chris Curtis. The classic Cleveland (Petz) vs. Cincinnati (Curtis) battle was deemed Fight of the Night by popular and reputable media sources Ohio MMA News and Bluegrass MMA, as the fans were treated to a fantastic stand up battle by two impressive strikers. “I thought I could finish him but the guy has a rock for a head,” Petz told Intimidation’s President & CEO Luke Jernigan. “That was my kind of fight.”

After four straight victories over Herbert “Whisper” Goodman, John Kolosci, Rudy Bears and Sergej Juskevic, Petz ran into one of the fastest rising welterweight prospects in the sport as he face Jordan Mein at Score Fighting Series 7 in November 2012. The 1st round TKO loss to Mein was a bit of a wake-up call for Petz who was looking for one last push at making it back to the UFC. “The (Jordan Mein) loss really showed me that I had to start over again,” said Petz. The father of a baby and a toddler said he didn’t feel like it was fair to the family to keep chasing the dream given he’d fought for the UFC seven times in two separate stints.

A member of one of the top gyms in the Midwest at Strong Style Martial Arts in Independence, Ohio, Petz has long been known for his adept boxing skills, earning knockouts in nearly half of his professional victories and had a total of 17 stoppage wins. Forrest Petz vs Chris CurtisIn his 11 year pro MMA career, Petz fought for the UFC 7 times, and the highly respected NAAFS promotion 3 times and is the former NAAFS Welterweight Champion. A longtime member of the Intimidation team, Petz has his own signature shirt designed by the Intimidation brand.

As a result of his phenomenal MMA career, Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz is officially the Intimidation Clothing Sponsored Athlete of the Month for June 2013. “In honor of his fantastic career and accomplishments, Forrest Petz is the June Athlete of the Month for Intimidation,” stated Jernigan. “There are few individuals I have ever come across in this world that I like and respect as much as Forrest and just being connected to Forrest, let alone naming him our Athlete of the Month, is an honor for the Intimidation brand.”

Forrest Petz started MMA in 1997, and after not growing up with a male role model in his life, did not have a lot of confidence. He wandered into a gym called North Coast Shootfighting and started training – that gym is today known as Strong Style Martial Arts. Forrest Petz MMADr. John Cocka, Joe Slokar, Jeff Cox and Marcus Marinelli were his training partners and he looked at them like brothers and has always had ton of respect for them. “They each had a huge influence on me as fighter and more importantly as a man,” said Petz. “They allowed me to gain confidence in myself and my accomplishments are in large part thanks to each of them.”

Looking forward, Petz plans to spend time concentrating on his family and work. He intends to continue to train and will be glad to help out at Strong Style or with young fighters whenever he can. “I know I can be helpful to young fighters,” stated Petz.

Said Petz on his MMA career, “I always did my best – my losses were never due to a lack of effort. I felt like on any given day I had a shot.”

Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month: Nick “The Savage” Duell

It’s what all fans clamor for: an exciting knockout to get them out of their seats and make them go “Wow.”

That’s what Nick “The Savage” Duell has become known for, the ability to finish a fight with a punch or kick at any moment. Nick Duell MMAThat’s why Intimidation Clothing is proud to announce that Duell is the Athlete of the Month for April 2013.

Most recently, Duell stood out on the extremely deep NAAFS: Caged Vengeance 13 card, as he stopped The Ultimate Fighter 16 veteran Julian Lane with strikes in the second round of their bout in Duell’s native Canton, Ohio over the weekend. The finishing sequence started with a left kick to the body, after which Duell finished off an injured Lane to take home the TKO victory. It was the seventh knockout victory of his career, moving his overall record to 11-3 as a pro.

The TKO over Lane was Duell’s second straight knockout victory, following up on an upkick knockout over Jason Buck at Caged Vengeance 12 last October. As the former NAAFS welterweight champion, Duell is looking to earn his way back to a title shot in Ohio’s largest organization – if a larger organization doesn’t snatch him up first, that is.

A member of the Strong Style Fight Team, Duell trains with some of the best fighters in Ohio, including UFC heavyweight Stipe Miocic, Bellator middleweight Brian Rogers, UFC veteran Forrest Petz, top-ranked female flyweight Jessica Eye, and more. Ranked as the No. 3 professional welterweight in Ohio by OHMMA.com, Duell owns notable victories over Lane, Bellator and TUF 9 veteran Kevin Knabjian, and TUF 12 veteran Daniel Head. Nick Duell MMAHe has also been supported by TruAssassin Fight Gear throughout most of his career and is one of several fighters who works with both Intimidation and the good people at the Northeast Ohio based TruAssassin brand.

As a result of his sustained success throughout his MMA career, Nick Duell is officially the Intimidation Clothing Sponsored Athlete of the Month for April 2013. “Nick Duell is a perfect fit for our Athlete of the Month award,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “Not only is Nick an incredibly humble and and smart fighter, but he is a fantastic person as well. It is an honor to work with someone so skilled and so grounded about his talents.”
