Midwest Connection: Intimidation Clothing emerges as premier MMA inspired apparel brand in Midwest

In less than three years time the Intimidation brand has emerged into one of the most respected and successful brands on the Midwest MMA scene. Once seen as an Cleveland brand, Intimidation Clothing has made strong efforts to expand the company’s reach hitting other Midwestern cities like Chicago, Columbus, Cincinnati, Detroit, Minneapolis and more. A title sponsor of the North American Allied Fight Series (NAAFS) and their SportsTime Ohio programming, the Intimidation brand is regularly seen across the globe on MTV2 and EPIXHD as well as on MMA highlight shows on HDNet and Spike TV. Intimidation Clothing - Impose You WillCreative, savvy marketing, great relationships and quality products have built the brand into a force to be reckoned with in the MMA industry and a rapidly growing lifestyle brand.

Creative Marketing

Built with the help of a successful Internet Marketing firm, Intimidation Clothing has used basic and advanced online marketing principles from day one. But in recent months the Intimidation brand has expanded their advertising efforts running ads on ESPN Radio and Fox Sports Radio programming throughout Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. “With Fox broadcasting free UFC events on the radio it is a perfect way to advertise our brand to the large number of UFC fans,” said Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. Brian Rogers MMAThe radio ads and a variety of traditional and internet radio interviews with Jernigan have helped the brand gain awareness in a variety of markets. This is coupled with a large number of fighter sponsorships both on the national stage and throughout the Midwest on the regional MMA circuit. From a MMA cutman to logos inside the cages of many of the top MMA promotions in the Midwest and sponsorships of fighters across the region, the MMA world is seeing the Intimidation brand over and over again at different venues in different cities, week in and week out. With plans to continue expansion into other complementary industries already underway, the MMA world is not the only focus and the company will certainly continue to seek creative ways to get the brand name out there to the masses.

The other element that often gets overlooked is the way Intimidation markets their own. “We regularly do a news write up about the professional fighters we sponsor as well as many of the events and promotions we sponsor,” said Jernigan. “If we can help a fighter like Brian Rogers get more attention or more views on YouTube or help a young pro like Mark Cherico build his name then it will eventually lead to our brand being seen more, so it’s a win-win.” While measuring the value of the company’s promotional efforts is not always easy, there is no doubt that promoting an article to nearly 14,000 Facebook fans or 2,200+ Twitter followers is valuable to the brand’s awareness. “People approach me constantly telling me they read our articles on fighters and events we sponsor,” Jernigan stated. “Add to it our staff’s strong understanding of Web Analytics and we can see the online marketing efforts are continually taking effect with our fans, customers, fighters and more.”

Relationship Building

“Intimidation Clothing has been a great partner for the NAAFS and more importantly for our fighters,” stated NAAFS President & CEO Greg Kalikas about the impact of the Intimidation brand. A veteran of the karate world and MMA promotion business with well over 100 events under their belt, the NAAFS is one of the top regional MMA promotions in the USA constantly producing top-level MMA talent and first class events.

“We’re ecstatic to have such a well-known and highly respected brand like Intimidation as a part of this momentous event,” said Rick Pyles, co-owner of Ultimate Victory Challenge in regards to their historic UVC 20 event on August 4th at the Ohio State Fair. “We love working with Luke Jernigan and Intimidation not just because of their business acumen, but because they embody the same principles that UVC was founded on: faith, family, and fighting.”

For Intimidation Clothing the quotes above are not about what the company has done, but more about what the company is about. “Whether we are talking about an intro level amateur or a UFC veteran, I value each fighter’s contribution to this sport,” stated Jernigan. “We have customers who I can remember what they bought a year ago and fighters who I can quote who they fought, when and where without blinking. We pay attention to detail and make people feel important, something all of us want in life, to feel important. The awesome part is we do not have to change or be fake to do this – this is how I was raised and how this company will continue to be built.” This was further proven in a recent thread about fighter sponsorships on the MMA Underground Forums at MixedMartialArts.com when UFC Heavyweight Shane Carwin and others shared their positive experiences with the Intimidation brand.

One of the most valuable components to the make up of Intimidation Clothing as a company is the many connections inside the MMA industry. “While our relationships are strong with a large number of fighters and agents, they are just as strong with many of the top MMA promotions in the Midwest. As a regular sponsor of NAAFS events in Ohio & West Virginia, UVC events in Columbus, Ohio, Colosseum Combat North of Indianapolis, the XFO in Chicago and SEG/Driller Promotions in Minneapolis, Minnesota, our name is regularly heard in a variety of strong markets,” said Jernigan. Add a strong, growing presence in Pittsburgh & Erie, Pennsylvania, and throughout Kentucky and Michigan as well as along the East Coast and the company’s growth strategy is clear.

Quality Products

When Intimidation Clothing was started the company’s goals were to produce quality products with bold themes at a great price. Those principles continue to ring true to this day. “If I am going to put my brand’s name on it then I am going to make sure the product is of good quality,” stated Jernigan. Jason Dent MMAFrom high quality t-shirts and hoodies to some of the best quality shorts on the market, Intimidation looks to hold this high standard. “I have been told by both Jason Dent and Forrest Petz that our EliteFighter board shorts are the best shorts they have ever owned. These two guys have a combined 11 UFC fights between them; that says a lot in my book.” The same goes for the company’s core – t-shirts. “I bought cheap t-shirts on my honeymoon which I washed and could never wear outside of the house again,” Jernigan said. “I vowed to never be so worried about cost that we hurt the consumer. Happy customers keep coming back and tell their friends; we are here to keep our customers happy.”

In less than three years time Intimidation’s growth as a brand is no doubt impressive. From their strong ties to many of the top regional MMA events in the Midwest to great contacts with the most successful gyms in the region it’s clear to see why Intimidation Clothing is catching on. In an industry where it seems a large number of individuals think they can swoop in a make money Intimidation has laid out the plan on how to build the needed trust and capitalize off their contacts. “We have watched several MMA fight companies pop up, make a few waves and drop off the face of the Earth in the past three years,” state Jernigan. “Intimidation Clothing has a foundation built for long term sustained success with nearly 30 authorized retail locations and fantastic relationships with many of the top MMA promotions, agents and fighters in the Midwest and beyond. We’re not going anywhere but up.”

Comer, Heiland, Baker score wins on successful weekend for Intimidation sponsored pro & ammy fighters

It was another successful weekend for Intimidation Clothing with the company selling in Cleveland and sponsored fighters having success across the USA. With a variety of sponsorships including several pro and ammy fighters competing across the country, Intimidation continues to show why the brand is one of the fastest growing in the MMA & combat sports industry. Here is a quick look at a few of the winners:

George Comer MMAPros:

Fighting for the second time in 7 weeks, “Smokin” Joe Heiland returned to his winning ways with a split decision win over Andrew Osborne at NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats VIII in Cleveland, Ohio. A member of the Strong Style Fight Team, Heiland improved to 7-2-1 as a pro.

Undefeated featherweight prospect Josh Baker remained perfect scoring a unanimous decision win over Brett Shoenfelt. Now 4-0, Baker has won all four of those fights since turning pro in early 2012 as he was sponsored by both Intimidation Clothing and Foundation Fight Company in this fight.

A 2-time NAAFS Amateur Champion, George Comer‘s name was one NAAFS fans were used to see as he dominated during his amateur career. But time off for training and school along with a loss in his pro debut last August left the GriffonRawl product in the “what have you done for me lately category.” In one of the most impressive performances of the night, George Comer (pictured, left) scored a 2nd round rear naked choke win over Khama Worthy, who was also sponsored by Intimidation, to improve to 1-1 as a pro after a stellar 9-0 amateur career.

Amateurs:

Fan favorite Cody Garbrandt was back in action for the first time since February in a amateur boxing match that saw Garbrandt score a TKO win. The Strong Style Fight Team/Old School Boxing product listened to boxing coach Joe Delguyd and will focus on MMA again with plans to compete again later this summer.

Sarah McLeod MMAAnother Intimidation sponsored amateur MMA fighter with huge potential, “Wild Wild” Wes Hanson improved to 7-0 as an ammy. The featherweight prospect from West Virginia scored a 1st round submission win in just 28 seconds fighting in Oklahoma to win the XFL ammy 145 lb title.

Sponsored for the first time by the Intimidation brand, Sarah McLeod (pictured) put in one of her best performances inside the cage. Fighting in the amateur feature fight in a 115 pound bout McLeod scored a decisive unanimous decision and later told the crowd that one week after competing in in MMA she would be competing in a bikini contest.

Shane Valko is a name that the Cleveland MMA market had not heard of before Saturday. But to those in the know in the MMA and wrestling communities, Valko is a 2010 National Championship at 133 lbs, a former four-time National Qualifier and three-time All-American. Making his NAAFS debut, Valko used his speed and wrestling ability to stop Ryan Arce in the 1st round via rear naked choke and improve to 5-0.

Two of the top amateur heavyweights in the state of Ohio, Tim Dunn and Jeff Hughes, were both in action in opposite corners of the state. Jeff Hughes, a product of the fast-growing Evolve Fight Team in Medina, admitted that it was not one of his better performances but scored a unanimous decision over James Rankin at the NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats VIII event in Cleveland. Meanwhile, fighting in Cincinnati at the “American MMA Ohio Championships,” Tim Dunn scored a stoppage after his opponent sustained an injury. With the wins Hughes improved to 10-2 while Dunn also improved to 10-2.

Strong Style Fight Team amateur JT Miller improved to 2-0 scoring a fast TKO win over Cameron Duncan in the first fight of the night at the NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats event in Cleveland, Ohio. Fighting in front of his hometown crowd, the former Cleveland State wrestler trained with Intimidation sponsored Bellator star Brian “The Predator” Rogers for the fight and it seems to have paid off nicely.
