Dan “Dragon” Spohn impresses on debut of TUF 19 with vicious knockout (video)

Season 19 of The Ultimate Fighter began with a bang last night as well as a heavy Intimidation flavor. In a season featuring five Intimidation alumni, it was an action-packed premier featuring knockouts, injuries, a come from behind submission and a 3-round battle that will go down as one of the best TUF fights in history.

Dan Spohn MMA - BellatorKicking off the show was long-time Team Intimidation member Dan “Dragon” Spohn as he started things with a bang – literally. Just seconds into the fight Spohn landed a hard right on the ear of a charging Tyler King to score one of the fastest knockouts in the history of The Ultimate Fighter. “One of the nastiest knockouts I’ve ever seen in my life,” said former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar.

Spohn (8-3) has been a member of Team Intimidation, dating back to his fourth professional fight. Intimidation sponsored Spohn en route to his winning the NAAFS Light Leavyweight Championship, in his 9-second knockout win at Bellator 51, and his two most recent fights for the UVC in Columbus, Ohio. The Cambridge native is a black belt in traditional kachido akijitsu. Spohn now makes his home in Columbus and holds victories over UFC veteran Josh Hendricks, John Hawk and current NAAFS Light Heavyweight Champion & now TUF 19 vet Josh Stansbury.

In a season featuring middleweight and light heavyweight fighters, Intimidation alumni and NAAFS vets Hector Urbina, Doug Sparks, Mike King and Josh Stansbury all had the chance to fight to get into the TUF 19 house. Urbina and King joined the cast as middleweights with Urbina (16-8-1), the former NAAFS Middleweight Champion and reigning NAAFS Welterweight Champion scoring a submission victory. Meanwhile, Mike King (5-0) a former NAAFS Amateur Light Heavyweight Champion won a 3-round decision in one of the best fights in TUF history. Meanwhile Doug Sparks and Josh Stansbury did not make it into the house for highly differing reasons. The always colorful and entertaining Sparks, who was sponsored by Intimidation at Local MMA fights in Ohio and Kentucky in the past, claimed to be half man and half polar bear in his typical off-the-wall way. However after removing his polar bear ears Sparks (7-2) was unable to get the wins falling via submission.

Meanwhile Stansbury (5-2), who was sponsored in his Bellator 71 win over Spohn in West Virginia, was impressive in battering his opponent before injuring his knee on a takedown.

The 16 winners were divided into two teams of 8 to be coached by former UFC champions B.J. Penn and Frankie Edgar. The finalists in the middleweight and light heavyweight division will then compete for a UFC contract at the live finale in Las Vegas on Sunday, July 6th.

The Intimidation brand is no stranger to the TUF house as the brand has worked with current UFC lightweight Daron Cruickshank (TUF 15) as well as TUF alumni Jason Dent (TUF 9), Luke Zachrich (TUF 7) and more. Intimidation was a sponsor of Jessamyn Duke (pictured, right) during her time on TUF 18 and recently signed TUF 18 and UFC alum Roxanne Modafferi.

Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month – Dan “Dragon” Spohn

August 5, 2013 by
Filed under Athlete of the Month, News, Sponsorships

Life as a fighter is full of highs and lows, and one mixed martial artist who has experienced both in his career is light heavyweight Dan “Dragon” Spohn. A dedicated father and family man, the Columbus native has competed as a martial artist for nearly his entire life; Spohn is a black belt in Kachido Akijitsu and is known for his creative striking style and well-rounded mixed martial arts game. A longtime member of Team Intimidation, Spohn is the Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month for August 2013.

Dan Spohn MMASpohn was on top of the world in September 2011, as he had just earned the second fastest knockout in Bellator history with 9-second KO of Dane Bonnigson in his debut at Bellator 51, moving his record to 6-0. Then the NAAFS champion after a victory over John Hawk earlier in the year, Spohn signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator with the intent to eventually earn a place in one of the organization’s tournaments for a chance to fight his way to #1 contender status.

And that’s when the tough times started. Spohn lost his next bout in Bellator just over a month later, as he fell to Kelvin Tiller via split decision at Bellator 56. Then Spohn got an opportunity to fight for Bellator once again in Ohio, as he welcomed Attila Vegh to the U.S. for the first time. The bout was back-and-forth through three rounds between the two counter punchers, but once again Spohn was on the wrong side of a split decision.

After the loss, Spohn received one more opportunity in Bellator, as he signed on to defend his NAAFS light heavyweight title against Josh Stansbury at Bellator 71 in West Virginia. And for the first time in his career, Spohn was finished as he lost via submission to Stansbury in the very first round. While Spohn was left to ponder his fighting future, Vegh began his run in the Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament at that same event and proceeded to win Bellator’s 205lb belt.

Dan Spohn MMABut despite the three-fight losing streak, Spohn remained upbeat and never got down on himself as a fighter. He made changes in his training and went back to controlling his own fight camps, and earlier this year he made his debut for the Columbus-based UVC organization with a submission victory over Robert Morrow in the main event at UVC 22. Suddenly Spohn was on his way back up the mountain, and his fighting career was given a new light with an organization that was willing to feature him as a main event star.

Spohn returned to the UVC in May, and once again earned a submission victory, this time stopping Aaron Mays with an arm bar in the first round. Now with two straight wins and a 8-3 pro record against some very tough competition, Dan Spohn is now ready for his next big opportunity. With an eye on the August 24th NAAFS Light Heavyweight title fight between John Hawk and Josh Stansbury, and the recent fights from the UVC closer to home, he should have several nice opportunities to extend his winning streak and gain national prominence.

“Dan is truly one of the good guys in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “Few carry themselves with so much class and it is an honor for our brand to work with Dan and his wonderful family. I am truly pleased to have Dan Spohn as our August Athlete of the Month.”

Cleveland’s Bellator 66 fight card stacks up as one of best in Ohio MMA history

April 8, 2012 by
Filed under Event Sponsorships, Fighter Sponsorships, News

Friday, April 20th, 2012 will very likely go down at the best best fight card in Ohio MMA history. An event that began with two marquee names in the main event with Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki, the card has had many top local and national names added to it in recent weeks. Brian "The Predator" RogersBellator 66, the second event in Northeast Ohio by the Bellator promotion to be co-promoted with the NAAFS, will take place on Friday, April 20th, 2012 at Cleveland’s IX Center and will feature several fighters sponsored by Intimidation Clothing. Tickets for Bellator 66 are on sale and range from $30-$125 and the Intimidation brand will be in attendance as an event sponsor while selling at the event.

While Alvarez vs. Aoki is the headliner for the event, the local fans in the Cleveland area will have plenty of local stars to cheer for. After his thrilling flying knee KO of Vitor Vianna at Bellator 61, Brian “The Predator” Rogers was quickly added to the card after Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, a Ohio University alumnus and former Ohio Bobcats football player, announced that the Middleweight Tournament semifinals would take place at Bellator 66. Along with Rogers (9-3, 2-1 Bellator) vs. Bruno Santos (13-0, 1-0 Bellator) the event will also feature Vyacheslav Vasilevsky (16-1, 1-0 Bellator) facing Maiquel Falcao (29-4, 1-0). However, a week later after the completion of Bellator 62, Rebney and Bellator matchmaker Sam Caplan announced that the Season 6 Lightweight Tournament semifinals would also take place in Cleveland. This announcement meant the addition of Rick Hawn (12-1, 4-1 Bellator ) vs. Lloyd Woodard (12-1, 2-1 Bellator) and Thiago Michel (10-2, 1-0 Bellator) vs. Brent Weedman (19-7-1, 5-2 Bellator) were added to the card. As a result, the five marquee fights at Bellator 66 now feature four tournament bouts and the promotion’s biggest name in a superfight. Jessica Eye MMAWhile Brian Rogers will definitely be sponsored by Intimidation Clothing at this event, it is expected that one or more fighters in Lightweight Tournament bouts will also be sponsored by the Intimidation brand.

While the Bellator 66 event has major national appeal, the local feature fights which are put together in conjunction with the NAAFS, will feature many of the biggest names from Ohio’s hotbed of MMA talent including Jessica Eye, Donny Walker, John Hawk, Jason Dent, Frank Caraballo, Dan Spohn, Joe Heiland, Julian Lane and Tyler Combs. To put things into perspective for the local MMA market, Eye, Walker, Hawk, Dent, Caraballo, Spohn and Heiland have all been main event fighters at NAAFS or UCB events in Northeast Ohio in the past two years.

In a fight with implications for both the Bellator and NAAFS promotions, Intimidation sponsored local favorite Jessica “Evil” Eye (6-1, 1-0 Bellator) is expected to face Aisling Daly (13-2, 0-1 Bellator) in the highly anticipated rematch of their June 2011 fight which saw Daly submit Eye. Not only does the fight have the NAAFS Women’s Championship belt on the line, but it could also factor into Bellator’s future women’s tournament plans with both Eye and Daly being Bellator veterans and ranked in the Top 10 in the world at 125 lbs.

Dan Spohn @ Bellator 51Along with the Eye vs. Daly fight, the event will feature yet another fight with an NAAFS belt on the line as 2-time UFC veteran Donny “Eagle Eye” Walker (18-9) fights for the first time since his release from the UFC as he faces Frank “The Tank” Caraballo (8-4). Walker, the Intimidation-sponsored NAAFS Featherweight Champion will face the Interim Champ in Caraballo, a 2-time Bellator veteran.

Also on the card will be NAAFS Light Heavyweight Champion and 2-time Bellator veteran Dan “The Dragon” Spohn (6-1), owner of the 2nd fastest KO in Bellator history, a 9-second KO at Bellator 51. Spohn (pictured, right) will face the toughest test of his MMA career in facing Attila Vegh (24-4), a recent signee to Bellator’s 205 pound division. Spohn will once again be sponsored by Intimidation in the fight as he wears Intimidation’s premium quality EliteFighter MMA board shorts in his fight. Another member of Team Intimidation (#TeamIntimidation) fighter taking on possibly the toughest test of his career is “Big” John Hawk (6-4), a fighter who is very familiar with Spohn. Hawk, who fought Spohn to decision twice only to drop both fights, is expected to face Marcus Vanttinen (21-3), a fighter who Vegh defeated by decision in May 2011.

Finally, the Intimidation brand will sponsor a pair of fighters for the first time with Strong Style’s “Smokin’” Joe Heiland (6-1-1) as he faces Julian “Nitrane” Lane (3-0) from Wreckroom Athletics in Mansfield, Ohio. Donny Walker NAAFS ChampionThe two lightweights will face off in a main event worthy match-up that could have title implications in the NAAFS 155 pound division.
