#LocalMMA Monday: NAAFS & Driven MMA

The first installment of IntimidationMMA.com’s #LocalMMA Monday features perhaps the biggest name in all of Local MMA, as the co-branded NAAFS/Driven MMA organization kicks us off. Based out of Canton, Ohio, the North American Allied Fight Series was founded in 2005 as “Gladiator Fighting” with current CEO Greg Kalikas in conjunction with veteran kickboxer Duke Roufus. NAAFS in the FlatsSince then, the organization has promoted more than 125 live events in the Midwest and has become one of the most respected amateur leagues in the country.

Kalikas’ NAAFS developed into a powerhouse on the local scene, holding the majority of their events in Canton, Akron and Cleveland before eventually branching out from events in Northeast Ohio to hold events all over the state. Then the organization was one of the first promoters to hold an event in West Virginia when the state regulated MMA in 2012. Over its nearly decade as an organization, the NAAFS has come to be known as a leader in amateur MMA, women’s MMA, and producing top talent for the UFC, Bellator MMA and other national organizations.

Stipe Miocic UFCThe list of names that have competed inside the NAAFS cage reads like a who’s who of MMA, including current welterweight top contender Matt Brown, current UFC heavyweight contender Stipe Miocic, women’s MMA star Jessica Eye, UFC veterans Jason Dent, Forrest Petz, Ben Rothwell, Dave Herman, Phil Davis, Donny Walker and more along with current TUF 19 star Dan Spohn, former Bellator MMA Featherweight Champion Daniel Straus, Bellator knockout artists Brian Rogers and many more.

In addition to its top names, NAAFS has come to be known for featuring women’s MMA, spearheaded by the first woman of Ohio MMA, Jessica “Evil” Eye. Eye competed in the first women’s bout in NAAFS history, headlined the first all-female card, became the first female amateur NAAFS champion, and became the first female to headline a card featuring men for the organization as well. NAAFS has also featured other top female talent, including Aisling Daly, Carina Damm, Rebecca Heintzman, Jessica Zomcik, Tamikka Brents and more.

Donny Walker NAAFS ChampionOn top of all of this, the NAAFS is one of a limited number of Local MMA promotions to co-promote events with Bellator MMA having worked together  on Bellator 51 in Canton and Bellator 66 in Cleveland, Ohio and Bellator 71 in West Virginia.

While the pro fighters brought fans to NAAFS events, it has been the astounding amateur talent that has kept them there. The NAAFS National Amateur Series is a true proving ground for amateur fighters who want to make it to the next level, and many top names have claimed NAAFS amateur gold before turning pro. Those names include Isaiah Chapman, George Comer, Nick Duell, Jessica Eye, Jerrell Hodge, and many more.

“It is hard to deny the resume that the NAAFS has built in the past decade,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “Now with Driven MMA they put on the cards that everyone else in the Midwest looks at and wishes they could duplicate. Few organizations have done more to further Local MMA in the USA, especially East of the Mississippi, as the NAAFS.”

The organization promotes many must-see events, including the annual “Fight Nite in the Flats” and “Rock N Rumble” summer events at Jacobs Pavilion in Downtown Cleveland, as well as their annual “Night of Champions” to award amateur titles.

John Hawk & StrongStyle wearing Local MMAIn 2014, the NAAFS became an all amateur series, with the berth of a new wing of the organization, Driven MMA. Driven MMA debuted in March 2014, and Driven MMA One was the biggest MMA card to hit Ohio in years. The event featured an all-pro lineup that showcased top fighters, including Bellator MMA veteran Dan Hornbuckle, UFC veteran Rodney Wallace, former NAAFS champion Frank Caraballo, and rising local stars like Chapman, Comer, Kyle Rozewski and more.

Now, the two wings will team up for the first time, as Driven MMA presents NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats 10 this weekend in Cleveland. The card features both professional and amateur talent, and it is headlined by Frank Caraballo taking on UFC veteran Tommy Hayden in a featherweight match-up. Also included on the card are several familiar names for Ohio MMA fans including Chapman, Rozewski, Hodge, RJ Buck, Dave Lastafka and more.

Intimidation Clothing prides itself on seeking out the top up-and-coming talent in the mixed martial arts industry and beyond, and it would stand to reason that many Team Intimidation alums would go on to see successes at the top level of the sport, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Stipe Miocic UFCWhile Intimidation has sponsored many UFC veterans – including Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia, recently retired Forrest Petz, “Ultimate Fighter 9” veteran Jason Dent, eccentric heavyweight Wes Sims, top lightweight Charlie Brenneman, and tough bantamweight Donny Walker – many fighters currently inside the Octagon have also donned the brand over the past few years:

Stipe Miocic
Currently one of the UFC’s hottest heavyweight prospects, Miocic was sponsored by Intimidation during his NAAFS Heavyweight Championship title run in 2011 as he began his pro career at 6-0 before signing with the UFC. The former collegiate baseball player and wrestler is a member of the Strong Style Fight Team – which is an official Intimidation dealer – alongside other Team Intimidation members Brian Rogers, John Hawk, Joe Heiland and more. Jessica Eye & Eye Believe MerchandiseHe most recently defeated Gabriel Gonzaga in January at UFC on FOX 11 and moved his UFC record to 5-1.

Jessica “Evil” Eye
When Bellator MMA dissolved its women’s division earlier this year, the Strong Style product became the hottest free agent in MMA. Just days later, she signed on to be a part of the UFC’s fast-growing women’s bantamweight division. The Ohio native put her 7-fight winning streak on the line when she made her organizational debut against former Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman at UFC 166 on October 19th where Eye earned a hard-fought split decision win (which was later overturned to a no contest). She will be back in the cage at UFC 170 when she faces Alexis Davis. Intimidation’s Jessica Eye signature shirt is one of the company’s most popular fighter shirts and Intimidation is also the former online outlet of the Eye Believe line of clothing & merchandise.

“Relentless” Roger Bowling
One of the best knockout artists in MMA, the Cincinnati product made his UFC debut earlier this year on the heels of having two knockout wins over the span of three fights. Roger Bowling & Brian Rogers @ Strikeforce in ColumbusNow at lightweight, Bowling (pictured on left with Brian Rogers) continues to be one of the more underrated fighters in the UFC. Bowling went 4-3 in his seven Strikeforce fights and was sponsored before his Strikeforce signing and multiple times inside the Strikeforce cage by Intimidation, who also makes the Roger Bowling signature tee.

Daron “The Detroit Superstar” Cruickshank
This well-rounded fighter has a background in both karate and wrestling, and he made his way into the UFC after starring on The Ultimate Fighter 15. He has put together an impressive 4-2 record inside the Octagon, including wins over tough veteran Yves Edwards and Mike Rio in his last outing at UFC on FOX 11. The Michigan native is currently climing the UFC’s steep lightweight ladder. UFC lightweight Daron Cruickshank with Intimidation CEO Luke JerniganIntimidation and Cruickshank worked together for nearly two years over a span of five fights before signing with the UFC as he went 5-0 while sponsored by the Intimidation brand.

Sara McMann
Sara McMann, the silver medal winner in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, is also a 3-time medalist at the FILA World Championships, taking home silver in 2003 and bronze in both 2005 and 2007. After a career in wrestling at 138 pounds, McMann has made a name for herself in Mixed Martial Arts at 135 lbs and is 7-0 after defeating Shiela Gaff at UFC 159. McMann will get a title shot next and face Ronda Rousey at UFC 170 in February 2014.

Anthony “The Recipe” Lapsley
The newest member of the UFC’s roster from this list, Lapsley signed in mid-October to fight at UFC 167. A native of Indiana, Lapsley brought a 4-fight winning streak into his UFC debut, including three submissions. Intimidation has sponsored Lapsley in multiple bouts, including his recent victory over Gerald Meerschaert at Rocktagon 23 in Cleveland in 2013. The veteran fighter has earned 15 career submission victories, and he has won 8 of his last 10. Lapsley (22-6) made his UFC debut at UFC 167 in Las Vegas last November.

Intimidation Clothing Athlete of the Month – Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz

Few can compare to Forrest Petz. As a man and as a fighter, Petz (26-10) has proven to be not only a pioneer in the sport but also a class act in and out of the cage. While his time inside the cage came to a close on Saturday, June 1st, 2013 there is no shortage of impact that “The Meat Cleaver” has had on the sport, especially in the booming Northeast Ohio market.

Forrest Petz MMA A veteran of nearly 40 professional fights, Petz, unlike many in the sport, was able to go out on top. After his second stint in the UFC ended in the Fall of 2011, Petz won 5 of 6 fights to close out his career winning at NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats IX last weekend over Bellator signee Chris Curtis. The classic Cleveland (Petz) vs. Cincinnati (Curtis) battle was deemed Fight of the Night by popular and reputable media sources Ohio MMA News and Bluegrass MMA, as the fans were treated to a fantastic stand up battle by two impressive strikers. “I thought I could finish him but the guy has a rock for a head,” Petz told Intimidation’s President & CEO Luke Jernigan. “That was my kind of fight.”

After four straight victories over Herbert “Whisper” Goodman, John Kolosci, Rudy Bears and Sergej Juskevic, Petz ran into one of the fastest rising welterweight prospects in the sport as he face Jordan Mein at Score Fighting Series 7 in November 2012. The 1st round TKO loss to Mein was a bit of a wake-up call for Petz who was looking for one last push at making it back to the UFC. “The (Jordan Mein) loss really showed me that I had to start over again,” said Petz. The father of a baby and a toddler said he didn’t feel like it was fair to the family to keep chasing the dream given he’d fought for the UFC seven times in two separate stints.

A member of one of the top gyms in the Midwest at Strong Style Martial Arts in Independence, Ohio, Petz has long been known for his adept boxing skills, earning knockouts in nearly half of his professional victories and had a total of 17 stoppage wins. Forrest Petz vs Chris CurtisIn his 11 year pro MMA career, Petz fought for the UFC 7 times, and the highly respected NAAFS promotion 3 times and is the former NAAFS Welterweight Champion. A longtime member of the Intimidation team, Petz has his own signature shirt designed by the Intimidation brand.

As a result of his phenomenal MMA career, Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz is officially the Intimidation Clothing Sponsored Athlete of the Month for June 2013. “In honor of his fantastic career and accomplishments, Forrest Petz is the June Athlete of the Month for Intimidation,” stated Jernigan. “There are few individuals I have ever come across in this world that I like and respect as much as Forrest and just being connected to Forrest, let alone naming him our Athlete of the Month, is an honor for the Intimidation brand.”

Forrest Petz started MMA in 1997, and after not growing up with a male role model in his life, did not have a lot of confidence. He wandered into a gym called North Coast Shootfighting and started training – that gym is today known as Strong Style Martial Arts. Forrest Petz MMADr. John Cocka, Joe Slokar, Jeff Cox and Marcus Marinelli were his training partners and he looked at them like brothers and has always had ton of respect for them. “They each had a huge influence on me as fighter and more importantly as a man,” said Petz. “They allowed me to gain confidence in myself and my accomplishments are in large part thanks to each of them.”

Looking forward, Petz plans to spend time concentrating on his family and work. He intends to continue to train and will be glad to help out at Strong Style or with young fighters whenever he can. “I know I can be helpful to young fighters,” stated Petz.

Said Petz on his MMA career, “I always did my best – my losses were never due to a lack of effort. I felt like on any given day I had a shot.”

7-time UFC veteran Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz was back in action on Saturday night as he faced off with 4-year MMA pro Rudy Bears. In what turned out to be his 3rd straight win, Petz scored a 1st round TKO victory at the C3 Fights event in Oklahoma on Saturday night. Bears, a Bellator and Strikeforce vet, came into the fight riding high after a win over Darryl Cobb at Titan FC 18 in May 2011, but fell to 13-8 with the loss to Petz.

The win for Petz comes on the heels of his April win over UFC, Strikeforce & Bellator vet John Kolosci in April and is now 3-0 since his most recent stint in the UFC. While he has faced a who’s who of fighters in or around his weight class, at 35 Petz (26-9) has put together two of his most impressive performances with his wins over Bears and Kolosci.

The sponsorship of Petz marks one of several recent sponsorships in the state of Oklahoma including Erin Toughill and Josh Bryant in recent months as well as a Freestyle Cage Fighting event. All of the sponsorships and marketing in Oklahoma have come after Intimidation added the Fight Bros. @ Thunder MMA shop in Muskogee, OK in early 2011.

This weekend was another big one for Intimidation Clothing. The MMA apparel company continued their momentum throughout the Midwest while strengthening their growing presence in the Southwest USA at a variety of events. Intimidation staff was on hand selling at two events in Northeast Ohio, Dan Bobish’s Ultimate Cage Battles in Parma and NAAFS: Proving Ground in Akron.

Daron Cruickshank MMAIntimidation-sponsored fighters included Columbus’ Billy Vaughan, who dropped a razor-thin split decision to hometown favorite and UFC vet Joe Jordan in Pikeville, Kentucky on Friday night. On Saturday night, Cleveland’s Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz scored a TKO win in the 2nd round over UFC, Strikeforce & Bellator vet John Kolosci in Valparaiso, Indiana. Meanwhile, in Parma, Ohio, Daron Cruickshank (pictured) of Wayne, Michigan scored a split decision win over Tiawan Howard at Bobish’s UCB event. At the same event Patrick Harman, a product of Midwest Martial Arts in Osceola, Indiana suffered a submission loss to “Cujo” Joe McCall. In Shawnee, Oklahoma, Intimidation-sponsored Erin Toughill stepped into the cage for the first time in nearly two years and dropped a unanimous decision for her first loss in over six years. The sponsorship of Toughill (11-3) is the start of a growing presence in the Southwest as the Intimidation name continues to build across the USA. Vaughan, Petz, Cruickshank and Toughill all featured Intimidation walkout tees and logos on their shorts with Harman sporting an Intimidation tee as well.

After a weekend of great sales and fantastic branding across the USA, the Intimidation brand will be in full force yet again this weekend with fighters in action in St. Paul, Minnesota and Canton, Ohio at two major regional MMA events. Weekend Preview: Big sponsorships this weekend for Intimidation Clothing

As stated in our post about Intimidation’s busy month of MMA & grappling events in April, Intimidation Clothing will not be resting in the coming months. In addition to a very busy month of events, Intimidation has an impressive lineup of fighter sponsorships lined starting this weekend in both Ohio and Oklahoma.

Dan Bobish’s Ultimate Cage Battles returns to Parma, Ohio on Saturday with Stars & Stripes and Intimidation Clothing will be live at the event with several pro fighters sponsored. In addition, Intimidation-sponsored fighters will also be in action on April 9th in Indiana as well as Oklahoma.

Erin Toughill FCF 46 posterAt the UCB event in Parma Intimidation will have three fighters in action with Daron Cruickshank, Brett Ewing & Patrick Harman all scheduled for fights. Michigan’s Daron Cruickshank (6-2) is widely considered one of the top prospects in the Midwest and will face Cleveland fan favorite Tiawan Howard (8-6). Cruickshank, a product of the MASH Fight Team near Detroit, was previously sponsored by Intimidation at the September 2010 King of the Cage event in Detroit and will face Howard at 170 lbs.

Brett Ewing capped off a perfect amateur MMA career (10-0) and made a successful pro debut just a couple of weeks ago. Fighting as a featherweight, Ewing, a member of Vision MMA in Cincinnati, Ohio, was been sponsored by Intimidation Clothing twice during his amatuer career.

Patrick Harman (8-8) is a fighter who has faced many of the top heavyweights in the sport. Harman currently trains with UFC veteran Todd Brown at Midwest Martial Arts in Osceola, Indiana, and saw his five-fight winning streak snapped when he lost a decision to Joe Galer nearly a year ago.

Rounding out the Midwest USA presence for Intimidation on April 9th is Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz. The most accomplished fighter in the group of Intimidation-sponsored fighters on this weekend, Petz has been working with Intimidation for nearly a year now. The 7-fight UFC vet scored a win in a January fight for the UCB promotion and will face UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator & TUF 6 veteran John Kolosci at HFC 7 in Valparaiso, Indiana. Interestingly enough, Kolosci (14-7) lost via submission to Intimidation Clothing-sponsored Kenny Robertson in August at Bellator 25. Petz will be seen wearing Intimidation’s premium quality board shorts and his own signature t-shirt.

Also fighting this weekend under the Intimidation banner is Erin Toughill, aka “Steel” from NBC’s remake of American Gladiators. Toughill (10-2) has widely been considered a Top 10 female fighter in the 145 lb weight class and could have a Strikeforce fight in the works if she wins at the Freestyle Cage Fighting 46 event in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Saturday night. The sponsorship of Toughill further strengthens Intimidation’s emerging presence in the Southwest after signing on Thunder MMA as a authorized dealer earlier this year.

In addition to the pro MMA sponsorships for April 9th, Intimidation will once again be a title sponsor at the NAAFS: Proving Ground event in Akron, Ohio. Intimidation has big plans throughout the month of April with sponsorships of fighters from Maine to Minnesota as the company continues to experience exponential growth.
