#LocalMMA Monday: NAAFS & Driven MMA

June 2, 2014 by
Filed under Local / Regional MMA, News

The first installment of IntimidationMMA.com’s #LocalMMA Monday features perhaps the biggest name in all of Local MMA, as the co-branded NAAFS/Driven MMA organization kicks us off. Based out of Canton, Ohio, the North American Allied Fight Series was founded in 2005 as “Gladiator Fighting” with current CEO Greg Kalikas in conjunction with veteran kickboxer Duke Roufus. NAAFS in the FlatsSince then, the organization has promoted more than 125 live events in the Midwest and has become one of the most respected amateur leagues in the country.

Kalikas’ NAAFS developed into a powerhouse on the local scene, holding the majority of their events in Canton, Akron and Cleveland before eventually branching out from events in Northeast Ohio to hold events all over the state. Then the organization was one of the first promoters to hold an event in West Virginia when the state regulated MMA in 2012. Over its nearly decade as an organization, the NAAFS has come to be known as a leader in amateur MMA, women’s MMA, and producing top talent for the UFC, Bellator MMA and other national organizations.

Stipe Miocic UFCThe list of names that have competed inside the NAAFS cage reads like a who’s who of MMA, including current welterweight top contender Matt Brown, current UFC heavyweight contender Stipe Miocic, women’s MMA star Jessica Eye, UFC veterans Jason Dent, Forrest Petz, Ben Rothwell, Dave Herman, Phil Davis, Donny Walker and more along with current TUF 19 star Dan Spohn, former Bellator MMA Featherweight Champion Daniel Straus, Bellator knockout artists Brian Rogers and many more.

In addition to its top names, NAAFS has come to be known for featuring women’s MMA, spearheaded by the first woman of Ohio MMA, Jessica “Evil” Eye. Eye competed in the first women’s bout in NAAFS history, headlined the first all-female card, became the first female amateur NAAFS champion, and became the first female to headline a card featuring men for the organization as well. NAAFS has also featured other top female talent, including Aisling Daly, Carina Damm, Rebecca Heintzman, Jessica Zomcik, Tamikka Brents and more.

Donny Walker NAAFS ChampionOn top of all of this, the NAAFS is one of a limited number of Local MMA promotions to co-promote events with Bellator MMA having worked together  on Bellator 51 in Canton and Bellator 66 in Cleveland, Ohio and Bellator 71 in West Virginia.

While the pro fighters brought fans to NAAFS events, it has been the astounding amateur talent that has kept them there. The NAAFS National Amateur Series is a true proving ground for amateur fighters who want to make it to the next level, and many top names have claimed NAAFS amateur gold before turning pro. Those names include Isaiah Chapman, George Comer, Nick Duell, Jessica Eye, Jerrell Hodge, and many more.

“It is hard to deny the resume that the NAAFS has built in the past decade,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “Now with Driven MMA they put on the cards that everyone else in the Midwest looks at and wishes they could duplicate. Few organizations have done more to further Local MMA in the USA, especially East of the Mississippi, as the NAAFS.”

The organization promotes many must-see events, including the annual “Fight Nite in the Flats” and “Rock N Rumble” summer events at Jacobs Pavilion in Downtown Cleveland, as well as their annual “Night of Champions” to award amateur titles.

John Hawk & StrongStyle wearing Local MMAIn 2014, the NAAFS became an all amateur series, with the berth of a new wing of the organization, Driven MMA. Driven MMA debuted in March 2014, and Driven MMA One was the biggest MMA card to hit Ohio in years. The event featured an all-pro lineup that showcased top fighters, including Bellator MMA veteran Dan Hornbuckle, UFC veteran Rodney Wallace, former NAAFS champion Frank Caraballo, and rising local stars like Chapman, Comer, Kyle Rozewski and more.

Now, the two wings will team up for the first time, as Driven MMA presents NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats 10 this weekend in Cleveland. The card features both professional and amateur talent, and it is headlined by Frank Caraballo taking on UFC veteran Tommy Hayden in a featherweight match-up. Also included on the card are several familiar names for Ohio MMA fans including Chapman, Rozewski, Hodge, RJ Buck, Dave Lastafka and more.

Weekend Recap: Record weekend sees Intimidation sponsored pro fighters score big wins in Ohio, Indiana & Michigan

Intimidation Clothing has long been a staple on the Midwest MMA scene, and Saturday night that was evident once again. While the brand served as a main sponsor of both the NAAFS and Colosseum Combat MMA pro/am events in Ohio and Indiana, as well as an event in South Carolina, the brand sponsored fighters at each event as well as in Michigan. Jessica Eye & Eye Believe MerchandiseIntimidation continues to prove to be the biggest supporter of local MMA in the region as a benchmark was set at Saturday’s NAAFS: Fight Nite in the Flats IX event in Cleveland. At the event held at the Jacobs Pavilion in The Flats, all six winners in professional bouts were sponsored by the Intimidation brand. Those winners included #1 ranked female flyweight Jessica Eye (pictured, left), new NAAFS interim lightweight champion Torrance Taylor, UFC veteran Forrest Petz, rising lightweight star George Comer and more. Intimidation also had a record breaking night at its official booth which featured over 50 different styles of Intimidation products as well as gear from Jessica Eye’s popular EYE Believe brand along with Soulless Clothing, Headlock Gear and Victory Fight Gear.

Top ranked flyweight Jessica Eye returned to action for the first time since upsetting former Bellator women’s champion Zoila Gurgel in December, and the Cleveland native picked up her seventh straight win with a clear cut unanimous decision over veteran and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Carina Damm. Also sponsored by Intimidation partner Cast Iron Supplements, Eye is one of the most popular fighters in Ohio and continues to be one of the faces of Intimidation Clothing. Meanwhile, Eye’s longtime teammate at StrongStyle Martial Arts, Forrest “The Meat Cleaver” Petz, announced his retirement from MMA after nearly 40 professional fights and two stints in the UFC. Forrest Petz vs Chris CurtisFans were treated to the last fight from Ohio legend as the veteran and fan favorite took home a gritty decision win over top prospect Chris Curtis in a 170-pound affair that was clearly the fight of the night.  Petz showed off his impressive boxing skills to take home a unanimous decision in his final appearance in the cage.

Torrance Taylor picked up his fifth straight victory and third TKO in less than a year, as he claimed the organization’s interim lightweight title with a fourth round TKO victory over Terry Blackwell. Taylor continues to be one of the rising stars on the Ohio MMA scene and mentioned after the fight his desire to make it to a larger organization in the near future. Now training extensively with the Strong Style Fight Team in Cleveland, Taylor seems poised to indeed take that step as he seemingly has really turned a corner in his career.

Lightweight George Comer continues to inch toward a potential NAAFS title shot, as the GriffonRawl product earned his third straight victory with a unanimous decision over Brian Camozzi in one of the evening’s featured pro bouts. NAAFS in the FlatsBoth fighters came into the fight with lots of hype, with Camozzi being the younger brother of the UFC’s Chris Camozzi and Comer training at GriffonRawl with UFC veteran Jason Dent and Donny Walker. But it was Comer’s wrestling that won the fight, as he imposed his will and stayed in control for the entire 15 minutes to take home a sweep decision win.

Other pro fighters sponsored by Intimidation on the card were Hector Urbina and Maxim Grishin as well as Terry Blackwell, Nick Duell and Brian Camozzi. Amateurs RJ Buck, Jerrell Hodge and Sammy Callari were also sponsored by the brand.

Along with sponsoring the NAAFS event, Intimidation also served as a sponsor for Colosseum Combat XXV in Kokomo, Indiana. One of the best-run organizations in the Midwest, Intimidation had another successful night as UFC and Bellator veteran Ryan Thomas picked up a win in the main event to earn the organization’s welterweight title while sponsored by Intimidation. Brett Sbardella MMAThomas, sponsored by Intimidation for the first time, picked up his 4th straight win to improve to 16-7 in his 7-year pro MMA career. Meanwhile, at Big John’s MMA in Northern Michigan Brett Sbardella (pictured, right) picked up a victory via arm bar just 37 seconds into his bout to improve his pro record to 5-2.

Grishin, Duell, Heiland complete successful night for Intimidation at NAAFS Caged Vengeance 12

Intimidation Clothing is well-established in the Northeast Ohio market, and it was evident how deep the ties run over the weekend, as three of four pro winners on the “NAAFS: Caged Vengeance 12” card were sponsored by the popular brand. Along with sponsoring the event and selling its popular apparel, Intimidation was also all over the cage in sponsoring more than a dozen of all of the fighters on the card.

Nick Duell MMALight heavyweight Maxim Grishin (14-6) capped off an exciting night of fights by stopping Bill Hill with a TKO in the first round. Now living in Northeast Ohio and training at the Strong Style Academy in Independence, “Maximus” features to be a huge contender in the NAAFS 205-pound division after picking up his seventh win in eight outings.

Intimidation has been a longtime supporter of former NAAFS welterweight champion Nick “Savage” Duell (10-3), and the popular fighter got a much-needed win in a knockout of the night performance when he crushed Jay Buck with an upkick in the first round. Duell had been on a rough 1-2 stretch over the past year-plus, but it was a return to success as he got back to his winning ways and produced one of his patented highlight reel knockouts.

Lightweight “Smokin” Joe Heiland (8-2-1) rounded out the main card with another win sporting Intimidation gear, as he claiming a hard-fought unanimous decision over fellow Intimidation fighter Jon “The Beast” Washington (5-4). Washington came out strong in the first round, but Heiland turned the bout into a gritty, hard-nosed fight and did enough to take home the decision on the scorecards. Joe Heiland vs Jon WashingtonIt was the second win in a row for Heiland after he picked up a victory at “Fight Nite in the Flats 8” earlier this year.

It was also a successful night for Intimidation-sponsored amateurs, as Evolve MMA product Josh Lasich (5-1) claimed the 2012 NAAFS welterweight title with a victory over Emmanuel Kangah. In the bantamweight division, two Intimidation sponsored fighters will square off for the 135-pound title in December, as both Jerrell Hodge (5-1) and Shane Valko (6-0) both advanced with impressive victories.
