UFC on FOX sees four Intimidation alumni with big opportunities in front of them

UFC on FOX 16 goes down Saturday night in Chicago, and four alumni of the Intimidation brand are all in action on the MMA world’s biggest stage. Jessamyn Duke, Daron Cruickshank, Ben Saunders and Jessica Eye each have big fights, each in their own way. In likely the most high-profile fight of each fighter’s career, Saturday night could determine the fate of each fighter as they move forward in the UFC rankings. Jessamyn Duke with UFC Champ Ronda RouseyFor Eye, a title shot against Ronda Rousey may be next, for others their jobs may be on the line.

Kicking off the night’s card for the Intimidation Clothing alumni is Jessamyn Duke, fighting in the night’s 2nd fight. Duke (3-2) faces off with Elizabeth Phillips (4-3) as she fights for her job after losing 2 straight following a win in her UFC debut. Intimidation sponsored Duke in her first three professional MMA fights, all under the Invicta FC banner, and released the Jessamyn Duke signature tees during her time on the popular TUF 18 program.

Daron Cruickshank, a member of the UFC’s roster since the beginning for 2012, will step into the Octagon for the 12th time on Saturday night as he looks to improve his 6-4-1 UFC record. Now 16-6-1 overall, Cruickshank faces James Krause (21-7, 2-3 UFC) as he looks for his first win after a No Contest and loss in his past two fights. Daron Cruickshank MMAIntimidation sponsored Cruickshank in multiple fights in 2010 and 2011 which spurred him onto The Ultimate Fighter’s 15th season.

For Ben Saunders, a second chance with the UFC has proven quite successful thus far. After an impressive 4-3 record in the UFC from 2007 to 2010, Saunders was cut and later signed with Belator MMA. Intimidation sponsored Saunders in Bellator’s Welterweight Tournament in 2011 as he continued to face many of the top 170lb fighters in the world. Now back in the UFC after a 7-3 stint with Belator MMA, Saunders looks for a 3rd straight win inside the Octagon.

Finally, the biggest fight of Jessica “Evil” Eye’s career serves as the night’s main event at UFC on FOX 16. At 1-1-1 her UFC record does not scream title shot, but in a thin division looking for rivals to take on Champion Ronda Rousey, Eye’s match-up with Miesha Tate could be everything she needs to vault her into the national MMA limelight. Jessica Eye MMA - NAAFSAfter a 10-1 run at 125lbs where she climbed to #1 in the world in her weight class, Eye made the move to 135lbs in 2013 and signed on with the UFC to compete against the most high-profile women in the sport. While Intimidation supported her in 9 consecutive pro fights over a span of four years from 2010-2013, the company created the Jessica Eye signature tee in both men’s and women’s styles which the company sold at many of her fights in and around Cleveland.

While none of these great athletes will be donning Intimidation Clothing on Saturday night, each played an important role in helping build the Intimidation brand over the years. We wish each fighter the best of luck as they look to advance on the highest profile stage in Mixed Martial Arts.

Roxanne Modafferi Monthly: How to succeed in the world of MMA

April 28, 2014 by

So you want to be an MMA fighter, and you just won your debut fight. Congratulations. You’re an MMA fighter. But now, how can you continue to be successful? The following is my opinion about the three most important things to ensure your success.

Roxanne Modafferi MMA1) Get good. You need to win fights in order to climb the ladder in rankings. The more you win, the more you will be a prospect and sought after to face more difficult and high-profile fighters. You will find yourself in bigger and bigger promotions, and get paid more money. Therefore, you need to develop all aspects of your game – striking, submission grappling, take-downs and wrestling, etc.

2) Show something special in fighting. You hear the name “Crocop” and you may think “High kicks.” You hear “Royce Gracie” and you think “Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.” Rousimar Palhares got 10 of his 16 wins by heel hooks or ankle locks. Ronda Rousey = armbars. These fighters are very good at one move or one aspect of their game. We look forward to watching them fight, and see how their opponents can handle that. Will Roy Nelson KO his next opponent with his right hand? Will Ronda arm-bar her next opponent? It’s very marketable and piques the interest of fans.

Being well-rounded is great, but being known for some special strength adds something extra. I believe every fighter should be well rounded, but we all have tendencies to favor certain things. We all have a favorite move. Why not allow yourself to spend a little more time on it, and sharpen it like a weapon? Especially in this day and age when the number of pro fighters are increasing, this will help you stand out. The point is, you want fans to remember you.

3) Show something special personally. Fighters compete for one night. The rest of the time, they are busy training and trying to keep fans interested in them personally. The more a fan is interested in and can relate to a fighter somehow, the more they will want to see them fight. A fighter shouldn’t be afraid to show something of themselves to the public.

I am “The Happy Warrior” who is all over social media, always answers every fan mail, hosts an mIRC chat room, sells merchandise like T-shirts, books, fans, pictures, etc. Shayna Baszler is known for loving heavy metal, guns, pro wrestling, and has a following she lovingly named, “The Queen’s Army.” Now she’s a member of “The Four Horsewomen,” taken after a pro wrestling team, consisting of Ronda Rousey, Jessamyn Duke, and Marina Shafir. Felice Herrig likes to post sexy pictures of herself in various costumes and attire. Miesha Tate does as well, and is known for loving cupcakes and baking. The Diaz brothers have their tough-guy images and weed.

It is said that amateur sports is all about skill. Professional sports is about money and entertainment– butts in seats, eyes on TV. A professional fighter has to be conscious of this. You have your job inside and outside the ring/cage. If a fighter is getting paid, the cash is coming out of somebody’s wallet, namely, the fans.

I’ve done some research around social media sites to prove my point. I’ve noticed some high-level fighters who are champions of various organizations who have under 2,000 followers on Twitter. Really? I encourage fighters to get on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, blogs, forums (although you have to have thick skin for criticism), and don’t be afraid to talk about what you like to do. Nobody is ‘boring.’ Everybody has other things they like besides fighting. Promote yourself. UFC fighter Mike Pyle is passionate about fly fishing, and after he won his last fight, he said he couldn’t wait to take a break and go on a fishing trip. He even had a fishing TV program follow him and video him doing it.

It doesn’t even matter if everybody likes you or doesn’t like you – what matters is that they remember you. As Ronda Rousey said, “Hate me or love me, but please debate me.”

What do you think? Send me your opinions: basilisk875 (at) yahoo.com

Intimidation Clothing is pleased to announce the newest member of # Team Intimidation, as female fighting pioneer Roxanne “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi will now be sponsored by the fast-growing clothing brand.

Roxanne Modafferi MMAA lifelong martial artist, Modafferi began training in karate when she was a teenager, and gained her brown belt in judo before graduating high school. During her college years at the University of Massachusetts, she trained at some of New England’s most notable gyms, including the Sityodtong Muay Thai Academy run by Mark DellaGrotte.

Modafferi began her mixed martial arts career while studying abroad in Tokyo, and she compiled a 5-0 record in just over a year competing for the legendary all-female Smackgirl promotion in Japan and the now Intimidation sponsored HOOKnSHOOT in Indiana. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language and Literature, she landed a job teaching English and Japan and returned to the Land of the Rising Sun.

In 2006 she became one of the most recognizable fighters in women’s MMA, competing against the likes of Tara LaRosa, Shayna Baszler, and Marloes Coenen in her Strikeforce debut in 2009. In 2010 she had a rematch against LaRosa at the Moosin: God of Martial Arts event, and she won by decision in what was perhaps the biggest fight in WMMA history to that point. She then fought Sarah Kaufmann for the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship in July 2010.

In August 2013, it was announced that she would compete on The Ultimate Fighter 18, once again making history as a member of the first cast of the show to feature women. After winning her preliminary fight to make it into the house, Modafferi became one of the more entertaining members of the cast, known for her quirky and happy-go-lucky attitude. She made her official UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale, where she dropped a decision to Raquel Pennington.

Roxanne Modafferi MMAMost recently, she signed a deal with the all-female Invicta Fighting Championships and is expected to debut for the organization soon. She now lives in Las Vegas and trains at Syndicate MMA under head coach John Wood and assistant coaches (UFC welterweight) Mike Pyle and (UFC vet & WSOF featherweight) John Gunderson.

Intimidation has long been a supporter of female fighters, including sponsoring multiple top fighters like current UFC stars Jessica “Evil” Eye & Sara McMann, recent star on The Ultimate Fighter 18 Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke, top prospect Jessica Zomcik and many more. In addition, Intimidation also released an official “I ♥ #WMMA” tee in 2013 in an effort to show the company’s support for female fighters across the globe.

“The signing of Roxanne Modafferi is an example of the direction of where Intimidation is heading as a brand,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “I had no intention of adding to our roster before hearing from Roxanne, but after she was referred to us by one of Intimidation’s great alumni, my conversation with Roxanne solidified all I had heard about her and seen on The Ultimate Fighter. Roxanne’s character and attitude, and her humble approach asking to be considered for sponsorship, and her understanding of the responsibilities that a sponsored athlete must embrace made this deal a no-brainer.”
