Team Intimidation’s Dan “Dragon” Spohn set to compete at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale

After making it to the semifinals in the prospect-driven tournament, Team Intimidation‘s Dan “Dragon” Spohn is set to compete at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale. Spohn (8-3) is set to face fellow TUF 19 castmate Patrick Walsh (4-1) in a preliminary bout this weekend in Las Vegas.

Roxanne Modafferi Monthly: Looking back on The Ultimate Fighter 18 experience

The Ultimate Fighter changes people’s lives.

The very premise of the show – going away from your normal life for over a month – causes change and disruption.  We TUF contestants have to prepare by taking time off from, or quitting our jobs entirely.  Leaving one’s family, whether it be parents, significant other, or kids, impacts us personally.  Furthermore, being stuck in a microcosm – a confined world where choices are limited – brings out different parts of people not usually seen, and teaches us a lot about ourselves.

TUF 18 CoachesTUF 18 certainly changed my life, from the day a friend on Twitter said, “Aren’t you going to TUF tryouts? They’re having women” and I said, “WHAT?  Really?  Then, yes.”  I immediately got time off from my boss at my English school in Japan, and dropped a thousand dollars on a plane ticket to Las Vegas.  That will be a year ago come April.

In the TUF house, my perspective on MMA training changed completely.  Eight of the ten years of my professional career had been spent in Japan.  Training styles had changed drastically in the US.  The coaching I received was ridiculously amazing.  I thought, “Ah, so this is what a full-time fighter does.  I can get more sleep and focus on getting better!”

After I got out of the TUF house, I knew I was out of the finals due to my loss, but would I get a chance to fight on the Ultimate Fighter Finale?  My TUF coaches were saying, “Of course you will!” But it wasn’t guaranteed.  But what if?  Could I fight to the best of my ability while holding down a day-job?

I thought, “If there was ever a time to quit my job, leave Japan, and focus fully on my MMA career, it would be now.”  I decided to do it.   And it tore me apart.  My friends, my job, my training partners – they felt like family.  Japan held my heart closely and lovingly, but I knew what had to be done – give up one dream to follow another.

Roxanne with UFC fight cornersI wrenched myself away from Japan and landed in Las Vegas.  I visited the gym “Syndicate MMA.”  After taking coach John Wood’s MMA class, and meeting fellow fighter Heather Clark, I decided “here.”  I have never regretted it.  My heart still aches for Japan every day, but I suppress it.

I speak English every day now, instead of Japanese, although I’m trying to keep it up.  I don’t have a day job, except teaching kids jiu-jitsu classes at Syndicate, and writing for a website mmasucka.com.   My savings account will hold out a while longer.  Unfortunately, I lost my TUF Finale Fight, and the UFC decided not to sign me.  I’m honored to be picked up by Invicta FC instead, and can’t wait to fight for them.

My mom quit her job in Massachusetts to come live with me and support me by splitting the rent (and giving me advice on everything in life, regardless of whether I THINK I know or not). :}  She’s great!  Now if only I can get my dad to call me more….:] I get recognized by fans when I go out to public places.  I got mobbed when I went to UFC 170 and fans asked me to take pictures.  I love it.  I’m honored and thrilled that somebody actually is wants to talk to me, and is in some way moved by my story and actions.

Women's MMA All-Stars at Syndicate MMA in Las VegasIn reality, this is what my heart desires deep inside– to make people smile and happy, and to make friends.

Although, I miss living with other like-minded people in The Ultimate Fighter house, who only want to focus on what they love – MMA.  I miss my morning hugs from my tall buddy (Jessamyn Duke), and I miss being shot by Shayna Baszler’s nerf gun. (Although not at 5 AM when coming back from the bathroom).  I made a lot of friends and connections.  I hang out with Shayna and Jessamyn when they come into Vegas for fights and training.

Out of the men of the house, I mostly keep in touch with Cody Bollinger and his wonderful family.  His wife introduced me to red radishes, which I eat for breakfast every morning now.

Roxanne Modafferi w/ Cody BollingerI asked Cody how TUF changed his life, and what lessons he took away from the experience.  “Even though TUF didn’t go the way I planned it really gave me a positive attitude about my MMA career and where I can take it if I keep working hard,” he said.  “The lesson I learned is, ‘Don’t get too comfortable.’”

TUF also changed the lives of Jessamyn and Shayna.  Shayna had been living in Sioux Falls, working a day job to support herself.  After the show, she quit that and moved in with Ronda Rousey.  Jessamyn had been living in Kentucky, training and working at her fight gym, also teaching Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at a pre-school.  She also moved to California to live with Ronda, and now Shayna, plus TUF coach and fighter Marina Shafir.

“In TUF, for the first time in my life I got to focus completely on the thing that I love, and that’s fighting,” Jessamyn told me.  At home, she trained as a pro would, but had responsibilities to the gym to make call backs, get enrollments, and work at the front desk if a customer came in.

“The experience was so worth it because I got to know what it was like to be what I wanted to be.  That’s why it made it so easy after I got out of the house to change my life. I never really believed in myself enough to do it.”

That’s exactly it.  The Ultimate Fighter showed me what I could become if I dared to make a major change and go after something with all my heart.

Intimidation Clothing signs female fighting pioneer, UFC & TUF 18 vet Roxanne Modafferi

Intimidation Clothing is pleased to announce the newest member of # Team Intimidation, as female fighting pioneer Roxanne “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi will now be sponsored by the fast-growing clothing brand.

Roxanne Modafferi MMAA lifelong martial artist, Modafferi began training in karate when she was a teenager, and gained her brown belt in judo before graduating high school. During her college years at the University of Massachusetts, she trained at some of New England’s most notable gyms, including the Sityodtong Muay Thai Academy run by Mark DellaGrotte.

Modafferi began her mixed martial arts career while studying abroad in Tokyo, and she compiled a 5-0 record in just over a year competing for the legendary all-female Smackgirl promotion in Japan and the now Intimidation sponsored HOOKnSHOOT in Indiana. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language and Literature, she landed a job teaching English and Japan and returned to the Land of the Rising Sun.

In 2006 she became one of the most recognizable fighters in women’s MMA, competing against the likes of Tara LaRosa, Shayna Baszler, and Marloes Coenen in her Strikeforce debut in 2009. In 2010 she had a rematch against LaRosa at the Moosin: God of Martial Arts event, and she won by decision in what was perhaps the biggest fight in WMMA history to that point. She then fought Sarah Kaufmann for the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship in July 2010.

In August 2013, it was announced that she would compete on The Ultimate Fighter 18, once again making history as a member of the first cast of the show to feature women. After winning her preliminary fight to make it into the house, Modafferi became one of the more entertaining members of the cast, known for her quirky and happy-go-lucky attitude. She made her official UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale, where she dropped a decision to Raquel Pennington.

Roxanne Modafferi MMAMost recently, she signed a deal with the all-female Invicta Fighting Championships and is expected to debut for the organization soon. She now lives in Las Vegas and trains at Syndicate MMA under head coach John Wood and assistant coaches (UFC welterweight) Mike Pyle and (UFC vet & WSOF featherweight) John Gunderson.

Intimidation has long been a supporter of female fighters, including sponsoring multiple top fighters like current UFC stars Jessica “Evil” Eye & Sara McMann, recent star on The Ultimate Fighter 18 Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke, top prospect Jessica Zomcik and many more. In addition, Intimidation also released an official “I ♥ #WMMA” tee in 2013 in an effort to show the company’s support for female fighters across the globe.

“The signing of Roxanne Modafferi is an example of the direction of where Intimidation is heading as a brand,” stated Luke Jernigan, President & CEO of Intimidation Clothing, LLC. “I had no intention of adding to our roster before hearing from Roxanne, but after she was referred to us by one of Intimidation’s great alumni, my conversation with Roxanne solidified all I had heard about her and seen on The Ultimate Fighter. Roxanne’s character and attitude, and her humble approach asking to be considered for sponsorship, and her understanding of the responsibilities that a sponsored athlete must embrace made this deal a no-brainer.”

A purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Emmons preference is no-Gi. His grappling style is so unorthodox, when people would ask Bobby about the different things he does he would jokingly them it was “White Trash BJJ,” and years later the phrase has just stuck. A professional Mixed Martial Artist competing primarily in the featherweight (145lb) division, Bobby Emmons holds a 3-3 record and was one of Intimidation’s first sponsored fighters in the state of Indiana. A product of Loogootee, IN, Emmons is coming off of a loss to UFC veteran Dustin Neace in the main event at Colosseum Combat XXIV last March. A highly entertaining figure whose brash sense of humor is apparent on Twitter & Facebook, Emmons went on a 3-fight winning streak after dropping his pro debut, and was scheduled to compete on the March 1, 2014 Colosseum Combat MMA card before suffering an injury.

Bobby Emmons MMAA veteran of many of the top local MMA promotions in the Midwest, Emmons has fought for the Indiana-based Hoosier Fight Club and the Intimidation-sponsored Colosseum Combat and NAAFS promotions as a professional. As an amateur, Emmons also competed for the nearby HookNShoot promotion as well as the Las Vegas-based Tuff-N-Uff and is a regular at HookNShoot MMA events in and around Evansville, Indiana.

Intimidation Weekend MMA Recap: Zomcik impresses with submission at Tuff-N-Uff in Las Vegas

Members of Team Intimidation were in action across the country this past weekend, as fighters competed as far away from Intimidation’s base in Ohio as Las Vegas. That fighter was top amateur female prospect Jessica Zomcik, who earned a victory at Tuff-N-Uff with a second round submission over Bryanna Fissori. As the top pound-for-pound amateur female fighter in the state of Ohio and #1 ranked female amateur at 145lbs in the world, Zomick (8-3) is on the verge of turning pro in the coming months. Jessica Zomcik MMAThe highly-decorated grappler will return to Tuff-N-Uff in November to fight for their 2013 Amateur Women’s Featherweight title.

Two Team Intimidation members were also in action at the Driller MMA/SEG Entertainment event in Minnesota, although unfortunately both Donald Williams and Matt Veal came up short in separate bouts. Williams succumbed to a submission in the third round after a hard fought bout, while Veal dropped a razor thin split decision in the promotion’s featherweight title fight.

Intimidation also sponsored and sold at the HardRock MMA 57 event in Kentucky, and Team Intimidation member Brandon Hurst competed for the organization’s amateur welterweight title. Hurst came up short in the bout, however, as the fighter was submitted by Que Parks in the third round.
