Bellator Commentator Sean Wheelock takes a look at Bellator’s Season 8 on Spike TV

There is no doubt in my mind that the upcoming Bellator Season 8 will be the biggest and best in the organization’s history.  Of course, first and foremost, there is our dream move to Spike Television—by far the best broadcaster for MMA ever—but also our amazing and amazingly stacked fight cards.

For the first time ever in Bellator, there will be 5 weight class tournaments in a single season.  Starting Thursday, January 17th, Season 8 will feature tourneys at 145, 155, 170, 185, and 205lbs.  Then there are all of the World Championship fights upcoming over the next 12 weeks—starting with Patricio Pitbull vs. Pat Curran for the featherweight title and Rick Hawn vs. Michael Chandler for the lightweight title on our Spike premiere.

And—the talent pool has never been deeper, with established MMA superstars such as King Mo Lawal and Babalu Sobral fighting in Bellator Season 8, alongside extremely hot prospects from literally across the world.

Bellator has of course been able to sign and showcase outstanding fighters since the organization began.  Eddie Alvarez came from Season 1; Pat Curran, Ben Askren, and Joe Warren were all featured in Season 2.

But here in Season 8, the depth of talent is quite frankly, phenomenal.  With the implementation of full brackets for every Bellator Tournament, just look at the 5 tourneys in Season 8 and try to project a winner, or even the final 4.  It’s not easy.  Try to find a guy who doesn’t belong or you know is going to get squashed in the quarterfinals, and he simply doesn’t exist.

What impressed me about Bellator from the moment that I joined the organization in January 2010, was the willingness and ability to uncover the next generation of MMA stars, superstars, and world champions.

It is my firm belief that one of the key reasons of failure for so many well-funded and overly hyped MMA organizations that have come before Bellator–only to fail quickly and spectacularly–is that they never even considered talent development.

With all of these now defunct MMA organizations, the mantra seemed to be: let’s go out and sign a lot of guys who were big names, but are now past their prime.  This might get you by for 1 show, maybe even 2 or 3, but then where do you go?

History tells us that you go out of business.

The very few MMA organizations that have achieved a high level of success since the sport began in earnest 19½ years ago, are the ones that knew that they had to uncover and develop talented fighters, and then give them the opportunity to become great (or fail trying).  It was never about recycling names and playing off of past glories.

Count Bellator on this prominent and exclusive list, and give credit to Bellator Founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney, Bellator President Tim Danaher, and to Sam Caplan and Zach Light, the two men tasked with searching literally worldwide for incredibly promising and ultra-talented fighters

Look at the names of the Bellator World Champions and Bellator Tournament winners, and you’ll see a list of amazing fighters who needed just one thing: an opportunity on a major stage.

Nowhere will you find wash-outs or has-beens or faded stars or gimmick athletes.

What you will see are a who’s who of some of the absolute top fighters in the sport.

I enter Bellator Season 8 incredibly psyched up, as the best job of my life has become even better with our move to Spike.  I also enter this season with a sense of excitement, openly wondering who will emerge as the next MMA star—a fighter known only to the hardest of hard-core fans just a few months ago.

Just remember, in 2009, you almost certainly had never heard of either Pat Curran or Michael Chandler, and yet here they both are, defending their respective Bellator World titles on our Spike debut.
