Long Beach, California: Strong Style Fight Team’s MMA and Grappling Coach and Cleveland Brasa’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Professor, Pablo Angel Castro, III, competed in the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation’s (IBJJF) 6th Annual World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship this past weekend at California State University, Long Beach. Martins Meadows, Cleber Luciano Costa, Guilherme Augusto Pontes Arashiro, Stephen A. Cardenas, John Rickel and Gustavo Gasperin.

Pablo Castro IBJJFIn his first fight, Castro defeated Stephan Cardenas. In his semifinal contest, Castro faced a very experienced and tough Jackson McVicker of McVicker’s BJJ Association. Jack McVicker is regarded as one of the top jiu-jitsu fighters in the country, and has instructed many accomplished fighters, including Dan HornBuckle (Bellator MMA and BJJ Star), Kyle Watson (Ultimate Fighter Semi-Finalist, and UFC star), Jeff Serafin, Christopher Howe, and Joshua Webb (BJJ-Stars). Down 2-0 and with McVicker’s defense revved up to 100%, Castro was able to secure a takedown within seconds of the end of the match to win it with two advantages to his favor.

In the Finals, with the Gold on the line, Castro faced a legend in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Cleber Luciano Costa. Luciano, a 4th Degree Royler & Rickson Gracie BJJ Black Belt is also a Black Belt in Judo, and has a plethora of accomplishments in Jiu Jitsu, Vale Tudo and MMA. In the first minute, Castro secured a takedown and Luciano instantly transitioned to a deep knee bar. Patiently, Castro was able to escape the submission attempt. As Castro and Luciano scramble for position and control Castro attempts a guillotine submission. Luciano in Castro’s guard, attempts to pass as they both scramble to their feet. Near the end of time, Castro turns on the defense to hold on to the lead and wins the coveted 2012 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship Gold Medal.

Along with Castro, one of his top BJJ students, Victor V. Ventresca won Gold at the 2012 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship Gold Medal, in his Blue Belt division and the Absolute division.

When asked about the IBJJF World Jiu Jitsu No Gi Championships, Castro answers, “This was definitely a big accomplishment, and it was an honor to compete against the level of talent in our tournament bracket. I am humbled by all the congratulations and kind words, but I think this is more a reflection of the degree of talent we have here in Ohio and the Midwest regardless of affiliation. We have a tradition of BJJ that goes back a long time… I would first like to thank Luke and Intimidation for their unbelievable support, as well as John P. Lennon, Strong Style, Brasa, and everyone who helped me prepare on and off the mat. Exceptional thanks goes to Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros, I could not have a better coach and mentor, and everyone in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community that has made the Midwest BJJ exceptional.”

Some of Castro’s notable fighters and students include Stipe Miocic, Brian Rogers, Jessica Eye, John Hawk, Joe Heiland, Forrest Petz, Nick Duell and Kevin Rothacker.

Quotes from Dustin Ware, (CEO of Ohio Grappling Challenge, which will soon be expanding nationally to the “American Grappling Challenge,” {Details to come soon!}) states,

  • “[I] just wanted to send you a personal congrats on obtaining something NO ONE else from Ohio has ever done…. Black Belt World Champ! Happy for you brother!!! Just don’t “big time” me in March when I bring my event to Elyria….”
  • “Your story is EXACTLY why I founded the OGC in the first place. I knew then that there was the talent here in our region [who] could win on the international level… just need a platform to develop the experience needed to win at that level. Proud & honored to know it helped you to obtain your goal!”

Another from a parent of a BJJ youth student and BJJ fan:

  • “First… Congrats… Second…I’m proud to say my son works with you when he does… You could be like 95 percent of the instructors in the state and just put your black belt in your trophy case. Instead, you chose to fight with it… That says a lot about you. THAT IS WHAT A BLACK BELT IS!!!”
