Near the end of time, Castro turns on the defense to hold on to the lead and wins the coveted 2012 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship Gold Medal.

Along with Castro, one of his top BJJ students, Victor V. Ventresca won Gold at the 2012 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship Gold Medal, in his Blue Belt division and the Absolute division.

When asked about the IBJJF World Jiu Jitsu No Gi Championships, Castro answers, “This was definitely a big accomplishment, and it was an honor to compete against the level of talent in our tournament bracket. I am humbled by all the congratulations and kind words, but I think this is more a reflection of the degree of talent we have here in Ohio and the Midwest regardless of affiliation. We have a tradition of BJJ that goes back a long time… I would first like to thank Luke and Intimidation for their unbelievable support, as well as John P. Lennon, Strong Style, Brasa, and everyone who helped me prepare on and off the mat. Exceptional thanks goes to Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros, I could not have a better coach and mentor, and everyone in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community that has made the Midwest BJJ exceptional.”

Some of Castro’s notable fighters and students include Stipe Miocic, Brian Rogers, Jessica Eye, John Hawk, Joe Heiland, Forrest Petz, Nick Duell and Kevin Rothacker.

Quotes from Dustin Ware, (CEO of Ohio Grappling Challenge, which will soon be expanding nationally to the “American Grappling Challenge,” {Details to come soon!}) states,

  • “[I] just wanted to send you a personal congrats on obtaining something NO ONE else from Ohio has ever done…. Black Belt World Champ! Happy for you brother!!! Just don’t “big time” me in March when I bring my event to Elyria….”
  • “Your story is EXACTLY why I founded the OGC in the first place. I knew then that there was the talent here in our region [who] could win on the international level… just need a platform to develop the experience needed to win at that level. Proud & honored to know it helped you to obtain your goal!”

Another from a parent of a BJJ youth student and BJJ fan:

  • “First… Congrats… Second…I’m proud to say my son works with you when he does… You could be like 95 percent of the instructors in the state and just put your black belt in your trophy case. Instead, you chose to fight with it… That says a lot about you. THAT IS WHAT A BLACK BELT IS!!!”

Intimidation Clothing continues to become a heavyweight contender

September 27, 2012 by
Filed under Fighter Sponsorships, News, Sponsorships

Known as one of the fast-rising brands in the MMA apparel market, both nationally and internationally, Intimidation Clothing continues to show why they are starting to be seen as a heavyweight contender. Eric Prindle MMAThe past few months have seen the Intimidation brand emerge onto the national scene through separate deals working with some of the “biggest” fighters in the sport. Social media attention from Stipe Miocic, Tim Sylvia and Shane Carwin as well as sponsorships of Sylvia and newly-signed Eric Prindle have vaulted the brand to contender status in the heavyweight division.

The heavyweight theme began in June when former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin praised the Intimidation brand saying “100% agree Luke is a hard working guy and his team does a great job for a smaller up and coming brand. They even get on Bellator.” Carwin went on to say “I think IC is a great example of a brand working harder then its endorsed athletes. He uses what is given to him vs getting the support he deserves. What a lot of the guys he sponsors do not realize is when they get to the UFC (because of his help) there will hardly be any sponsors willing to pay them what he pays for their non televised fights. If I was the sponsored athlete I would be working my tail off to make sure they sold product and could (c)ome with me to the next level.”

It continued throughout the summer with undefeated UFC heavyweight Stipe Miocic promoting @IntimidationMMA on Twitter, helping the company add to it’s already impressive social media presence. Stipe Miocic UFCWhile Miocic (9-0, 3-0 UFC)  was training to headline UFC on Fuel TV 5 against Stefan Struve, the opportunity for Intimidation to sponsor for 2-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia arose. Sylvia, who fought Andrei Arlovski for the 4th time in early September for Asia’s largest MMA promotion, One FC, was also a strong advocate of the Intimidation brand on Twitter and added a big name to the lineup of up-and-coming fighters sponsored by Intimidation.

Meanwhile, with the record social media promotion and growth experienced by the company in August, Intimidation’s team was working to finalize a deal with the defending Bellator Heavyweight Tournament Champion Eric Prindle. Prindle, who returns to the cage in early October at Bellator 75 in the opening round of Bellator’s Season 7 Heavyweight Tournament, will face Thiago Santos for the right to advance in the Fall tourney. Prindle, who was a successful amateur boxer in U.S. Armed Forces Tournaments during his military service, is a heavyweight in every sense of the word standing 6′ 5″ and weighing in at the heavyweight maximum of 265 lbs.

Adam Milstead MMAIn addition, the Intimidation brand is one of the main sponsors of Minnesota Heavyweight Champion Raphael Butler (5-0) as well as Pittsburgh-based heavyweight Adam “The Prototype” Milstead (2-1). Butler is coming off a 15 second KO of previously unbeaten Brett Murphy (4-1) for the Intimidation sponsored SEG/Driller MMA promotion in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Another fighter that the company feels has a very high ceiling is Adam Milstead who drew praise from Intimidation CEO Luke Jernigan who stated, “Milstead, in addition to being one of the nicest and most genuine individuals I have met in this industry, has the potential to make a very good name for himself in this sport. He trains at a fantastic gym at Fight Club Pittsburgh and has the intangibles needed to reach the next level.” A product of Fight Club Pittsburgh, Milstead is now 2-0 as a heavyweight after winning at NAAFS: Combat Challenge 22 via 1st round guillotine choke in Akron, Ohio.
